Coast Salish people have cared for and nurtured the abundance this territory offers for over 5,000 years. The Gulf Islands have been explored since the late 18th century by Russian, Spanish and English navigators, consequently the linguistic assortment of geographical names. Permanent settlement, at first by farmers, began about 1870. A museum here suggests their lifestyle.
